Description

This project is a five-year Official Development Assistance (ODA) project supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and implemented by Pukyong National University (PKNU) in collaboration with the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Zanzibar. The project aims to empower women engaged in marine fisheries and aquaculture by improving their technical skills, productivity, income and participation in the marine fisheries value chain. It focuses primarily on seaweed farming, particularly Eucheuma cottonii and E. spinosum, while also introducing additional aquaculture technologies such as sea cucumber farming. The project supports the transfer of Korean aquaculture technologies and knowledge through training, capacity building, improved farming practices, post-harvest handling, processing, drying and value addition. It also aims to strengthen market linkages and develop both domestic and export markets for marine products. Ultimately, the project seeks to establish an integrated value chain covering production, processing and marketing, thereby increasing the competitiveness of Zanzibar’s marine products, creating additional income opportunities and strengthening the economic empowerment and social status of women in coastal communities.
